Two years later, Robert graduated at Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia in December 1942. Upon graduation, Dorothy joined him to pin on his bars. Dorothy told a news reporter that "when I was pinning them [the bars] on, I bent one. He said he'd always wear it that way, that it would bring him good luck. When his clothes were sent back to me, that bent bar was still pinned on his blouse. I'm afraid it was a jinx instead of good luck.” This memorable dialogue was one of the last moments when Robert and Dorothy were together, since Robert would now be on his way to Normandy, France for war. After Robert’s departure to France, Dorothy decided to enroll at Jackson Commercial College to take care of her little daughter, Miss Betty Lou Breedlove.
